1951

Our Founding

IKO is founded in Calgary, Alberta by Isidore Koschitzky, 
initially producing building paper; shingle production began 
three years later.

1960

Asphalt Production

IKO becomes the first shingle manufacturer to process 
its own asphalt on site.

1972

European Expansion

IKO expands to Europe by building a plant in Ham, Belgium.

1980

U.S. Expansion

IKO opens its first factory in the U.S. with the purchase of its Wilmington, Delaware facility.

1999

First Built U.S. Site

IKO opens its first fully built U.S. plant in Sumas, WA, featuring its first four-wide laminator and a modified bitumen line.

2001

Entering Commercial 
Rubber Roofing

IKO acquires companies that belonged to the Ruberoid group, becoming market leaders in commercial rubber roofing to 
the U.S. and Europe.

2010s

Global Expansion

IKO expands in Europe with a shingle plant in Slovakia (2011) and an insulation plant in France (2014). IKO also grows in the U.S. South with new plants in Sylacauga, AL (2014) and Hillsboro, TX (2017).

2024

Metal Roofing and 
New Zealand Expansion

IKO Metals is established following the acquisitions of Roof Tile Group and Ross Roof Group, with new metal roofing plants announced in Ennis, TX and Auckland, New Zealand.
